Bitchified Music: Toby Lightman I'm sure you have all the heard the song, "Devils and Angels" by Toby Lightman and you haven't, you're definitely missing out. The funk, rock and r&b song is making light rotation on radio stations and television but deserves a lot more than it's getting. Toby Lightman has created one of the most ingeniously diverse albums to come out in a long time. The mix of her soulful voice and lyrical prowess is enough to break down musical boundaries everywhere. The singer/songwriter wasn't always into expressing her musical gift so freely. "In high school, a friend of mine suggested we in enroll in a vocal workshop class so we could just fool around, sing and hang out. What ended up happening, however, was that the teacher noticed I had some talent and kept encouraging me to audition for more advanced choral groups. I kept getting accepted and that's when I realized, "Okay, maybe I can sing". She draws her inspiration from some of music's greatest musicians. The singer explains, "Besides my rock and soul influences, I'm into a lot of jazz singers like Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald. I loved the way these singers could scat or riff and I found myself trying to do that with my own voice. That may be why some people think my songs have an R&B element in them." With her all time favorite singer/songwriter being Stevie Wonder, and all of her other influences, its no wonder she's able to come up with her musical masterpiece and debut album, "Little Things." Tracks like "Leave It Inside", "The River" and my personal favorite "The Front Row" make this record a must have. This may be one of most under rated albums to come out so far in 2004 but I guarantee that it's worth every penny you spend on it.
